A Study on the Anomalies of Liver in the South Indian Cadavers International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha.
Liver is the largest gland in the body and rarely shows variations in its lobes and fissures. We studied 55 Formalin-fixed livers for occurrence of abnormal shape, lobes, fissures and position of gall bladder. In 60% of cases the liver was normal. 40% livers showed one or the other variations. Additional lobes were found in 9.09% of cases. Additional fissure was found in 1.81% of cases. Presence of dumbbell shaped caudate lobe and presence of large papillary process was noted in 1.81% cases each. In 1.81% cases the fissure for ligamentum teres was absent or situated on the anterior surface of the liver. In 1.81% of cases each the liver was either extremely long or extremely flat. In 18.18% of the cases, the gall bladder was short and its fundus did not...

A Study on the Number and Arrangement of the Structures Passing Through the Porta Hepatis in South Indian Population International Journal of Morphology
Sapna,M; Shetty,Surekha D; Nayak B,Satheesha.
The porta hepatis of the liver is a very important area surgically. The knowledge of the variations in the structures passing through the porta hepatis might be of great help in reducing the risks of surgery in this area. In the current study 59 livers from South Indian cadavers were observed for the number and arrangement of the structures passing through the porta hepatis. In all the livers the portal vein was posteriormost and the hepatic duct was the anteriormost structure. The hepatic artery and its branches were in between the duct and the vein. The mean weight of the liver was 1.025 kg. The mean length of porta hepatis was 4.825 cm and the mean breadth was 2.433 cm. The number varied from one to three for the duct and vein but for the artery it was...

Advancement in liver laparoscopic resection – development of a new surgical device BJMBR
Vavra,P.; Karnik,L.; Skrobankova,M.; Jurcikova,J.; Ihnat,P.; Zonca,P.; Peteja,M.; El-Gendi,A.; Czudek,S..
Liver resection is the standard treatment for any liver lesion. Laparoscopic liver resection is associated with lower intra-operative blood loss and fewer complications than open resection. Access to the posterior part of the right liver lobe is very uncomfortable and difficult for surgeons due the anatomic position, especially when employing laparoscopic surgery. Based on these experiences, a new laparoscopic device was developed that is capable of bending its long axis and allowing the application of radiofrequency energy in areas that were not technically accessible. The device is equipped with four telescopic needle electrodes that cause tissue coagulation after the delivery of radiofrequency energy. Ex vivo testing was performed in 2012 and 2014 at...

Ammonia poisoning causes muscular but not liver damage in cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Antonelli,A.C.; Torres,G.A.S.; Soares,P.C.; Mori,C.S.; Sucupira,M.C.A.; Ortolani,E.L..
Twelve steers were intraruminally administered a high dose (0.5g/kg BW) of urea to study the damage effect of ammonia poisoning on liver and/or muscles. Blood samples were collected to determine ammonia and activities of gammaGT, AST and CK. Eleven steers were successfully poisoned and treated properly, but one succumbed. Poisoned cattle showed high concentration of ammonia, and higher activities of AST and CK. The higher the ammonia, the greater were the activities of AST (r=0.59) and CK (r=0.61). The correlation between AST and CK was high and significant (r=0.80), but not between AST and gammaGT (r=0.19). The activities of AST and CK were higher after the beginning of the convulsive episodes due to ammonia poisoning. Those results showed that occurred...

Anatomical Description of the Liver, Hepatic Ligaments and Omenta in the Coypu (Myocastor coypus) International Journal of Morphology
Pérez,W; Lima,M.
The objective of this work is to give a complementary description of the hepatic lobulation, the hepatic ligaments and the omenta of the nutria. Thirty nutrias were studied by gross dissection. The liver of the nutria was divided into six lobules as follows: left lateral, left medial, quadrate, right medial, right lateral, and caudate lobes. The caudate lobe was divided into a papillary and a caudate process. A whole falciform ligament, extending as far as the navel, was found in all animals. This one was the only ligament that contained fat in between its sheets, and it was abundant in the umbilical part. The left triangular ligament had two parts. One of them was attached to the left lateral lobe of the liver and the other one to the left medial lobe....

Drugs and surgery can interfere with the biodistribution of radiopharmaceuticals and data about the effect of splenectomy on the metabolism of phytate-Tc-99m are scarce. This study aimed at evaluating the interference of splenectomy on phytate-Tc-99m biodistribution and liver function in rats. The SP group rats (n=6) underwent splenectomy. In group C (control) the animals were not operated on. After 15 days, all rats were injected with 0.1mL of Tc-99m-phytate via orbital plexus (0.66MBq). After 30 minutes, liver samples were harvested, weighed and the percentage of radioactivity per gram (%ATI/g) was determined by a Wizard Perkin-Elme gama counter. The ATI%/g in splenectomized rats (0.99±0.02) was significantly higher than in controls (0.4±0.02),...

Blood glucose regulation during fasting in rats under food restriction since birth BABT
Vitoriano,Adriana de Souza; Malta,Ananda; Barrena,Helenton Christian; Furlan,Maria Montserrat Diaz Pedrosa; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa; Gazola,Vilma Godoi.
The effect of severe food restriction since birth on regulation of fasting glycemia in male Wistar rats was investigated. The control group (CG) had free supply of chow, while the restriction group (RG) received 50% of the amount ingested by the CG. The experiments were done in adult (60 days) overnight fasted rats in which glycemia, liver free glucose levels and hepatic glycogen concentration were measured. In part of the experiments in situ liver perfusion was done. The results showed that livers from the RG had higher glycogenolysis rates but lower gluconeogenesis rates from L-alanine (10 mM). Since RG showed maintained glycemia during fasting, it could be concluded that livers from RG produced glucose preferentially from glycogenolysis in detriment of...

Conjugated linoleic acid and fatty acid binding protein as antioxidants InVet
Piergiacomi,V.A.; Palacios,A..
Studies were carried out to determine the effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and rat liver cytosolic protein enriched in fatty acid binding protein (FABP) on the non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation of rat liver microsomes. The inhibition of lipid peroxidation was more evident when the FABP containing fraction obtained from CLA-group was used with either kind of microsomes (CLA and control). The chemiluminescence and polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of rat liver microsomes changed after CLA treatment. When native and peroxidized microsomes obtained from control group were compared, the most affected polyunsaturated fatty acids were: C18:2, C18:3 and C20:4, while in CLA-group C20:4 was mainly peroxidized The simultaneous analysis of...

Detection of immunoglobulin G in the lung and liver of hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis BJMBR
Mathias,R.; Costa,F.A.L.; Goto,H..
Several organs are affected in visceral leishmaniasis, not only those rich in mononuclear phagocytes. Hypergammaglobulinemia occurs during visceral leishmaniasis; anti-Leishmania antibodies are not primarily important for protection but might be involved in the pathogenesis of tissue lesions. The glomerulonephritis occurring in visceral leishmaniasis has been attributed to immune complex deposition but in other organs the mechanism has not been studied. In the current study we demonstrated the presence of IgG in the lung and liver of hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis. Hamsters were injected intraperitoneally with 2 x 10(7) amastigotes of Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and the presence of IgG in the liver and lung was evaluated at 7, 15, 30, 45, 80 and...

Our objective was to analyse the hepatic transcriptomes of juvenile rainbow trout fed with a plant-based diet. We focused our analysis on the total replacement of fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) by a 100% plant-based diet (0% FM, 0% FO). We analysed the postprandial hepatic transcriptomes of rainbow trout fed the two diets 8 h after feeding. Six total hepatic RNAs from each dietary group were hybridised against a trout cDNA microarray (9K). After treatment of the data respecting the standard MIAME (Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment) protocol, we found that 176 hepatic genes were differentially expressed between fish fed the two diets: 96 and 80 were over-expressed and under-expressed, respectively, in trout fed the plant-based diet. A...
